Methods　The rat model of focal cere ral ischemia induced y occlusion of int raluminal filament w as used. The level of lactic acid( LA) and activities of lactate dehydrogenase( LDH) and creatine kinase( CK) in is- 2 2 chemic hemisphere after h of ischemia and h of reperfusion w ere determined y iochemical analysis and the in- 24 . 　 farct volume after h of ischemia was measured y HE staining com ined with image analysis Results Piracetam ( 200mg /kg) decreased the level of LA and enhanced the activity of LDH in ischemic h emisphere caused y focal cere ral ischemia, and had no effect on the activity of CK. It reduced the infarct volume af ter 24h of ischemia signif- . 　 icantly Conclusion Piracetam may improve the energy meta olism and at tenuate ischemic injury caused y focal cere ral ischemia.
