Charles John Huffam Dickens(1812-1870) 曾冬兰 Charles John Huffam Dickens(7 February 1812-9 June 1870)was an English writer and social critic who is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period and the creator of some of the world’s fictional characters. Born in Portsmouth, England, Dickens left school to work in a factory after his father was thrown into debtors prison. Though he had little formal education, he was driven to succeed because of his impoverished early life. Early years In 1833 Dickens‘s first story, A Dinner at Poplar Walk was published in the London periodical, Monthly Magazine. The following year he rented rooms at Furnival’s Inn becoming a political journalist, reporting on parliamentary debate and travelling across Britain to cover election campaigns for the Morning Chronicle(出晨报). Journalism and early novels Writing career Early period (1833—1841) Foreign travel period (1841—1847) Later period(1848—1861) Last period(1861—1870) Death On 8?June 1870, Dickens suffered another stroke at his home, after a full days work on Edwin Drood. He never regained consciousness, and the next day, on 9?June, five years to the day after the Staplehurst rail crash (9 June 1865), he died at Gads Hill Place. *
