提高学生英语自主阅读重要性中图分类号:H319.3文献标识码:A Abstract As early as two thousand years ago, our ancient educationalist Confucius has pointed out that “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish, and you have fed him for a lifetime.” His argument has, in fact, shown the importance of developing learner autonomy. Key words: English reading, learner autonomy, metacognitive strategy Of all the four language skills — listening, speaking, reading, and writing, reading is perhaps the most important and useful for most EFL (English as a Foreign Language)learners, for reading is the most basic means to obtain information, to learn, and to entertain people. Without reading, opportunities for understanding the world and achieving educational objectives are lost. Reading also forces us to think and use our imaginations. It is greatly important to improve one?s reading proficiency. However, many learners still feel difficult and remain poor in English reading, which can be evidenced by their poor performance in reading comprehension of CET4 and CET6. Such universal phenomenon arouses my great interests, I began to pay attention to the students? reading behavior. Firstly, in English reading class, both teachers and learners always focus on the content of reading materials rather than the process involved in reading. After reading, learners only check answers to see whether they are right or wrong, seldom reflecting on their reading strategies or process. The second reason is that, in English class, most learners? input in class is insufficient. To improve their English reading proficiency, learners need to read extensively after class. However, the students are lukewarm and lack of determination and self-discipline to read autonomously and independently, lack of the cooperative learning. Even if learners do read, most of their reading materials are limited and usually restricted to textbooks and reading comprehension exercises. As Durkin (1993) argues that Eng
