And from which earth and grave and dust The Lord shall raise me up, I trust. GOOD FREND FOR IESVS SAKE FORBEARE TO DIGG THE DVST ENCLOASED HEARE BLESTE BE Y MAN Y SPARES THES STONES AND CVRST BE HE ?[AT] MOVES MY BONES Reader, I am to let thee know, Donnes body only lies below; For could the grave his soul comprise, Earth would be richer than the skies. Heroes and Kings! your distance keep; In peace let one poor Poet sleep, Who never flatterd Folks like you: Let Horace blush, and Virgil too. Nature and Nature’s Law lay hid in Night. God said, Let Newton be! and All was Light. (Alexander Pope: Intended for Sir Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey) Here rests his head upon the lap of earth A youth to Fortune and to Fame unkown. Fair Science frowned not on his humble birth, And Melancholy marked him for her own. Large was his bounty, and his soul sincere, Heaven did a recompense as largely send: He gave to Misery all he had, a tear, He gained from Heaven (’twas all he wished) a friend. No farther seek his merits to disclose, Or draw his frailties from their dread abode (There they alike in trembling hope repose), the bosom of his Father and his God. (Thomas G
