TuringandvonNeumann’sBrainsandtheirComputers th th DedicatedtoAlanTuring’s100 birthdayandJohnvon Neumann’s110 birthday SorinIstrail*andSolomonMarcus** InthispaperwediscussthelivesandworksofAlanTuringandJohnvonNeumannthat intertwinedandinspiredeachother,focusingontheirworkonthebrain.Ouraimisto commentandtosituatehistoricallyandconceptuallyanunfinishedresearchprogramof JohnvonNeumann,namely,towardstheunificationofdiscreteandcontinuous mathematicsviaaconceptofthermodynamicerror;hewantedanewinformationand computationtheoryforbiologicalsystems,especiallythebrain.Turing’sworkcontains parallelstothisprogramaswell.Wetrytotakeintoaccountthelevelofknowledgeatthe timetheseworkswereconceivedwhilealsotakingintoaccountdevelopmentsaftervon Neumann’sdeath.OurpaperisacallforthecontinuationofvonNeumann’sresearch program,tometaphoricallyputmeat,ormoredecisively,muscle,ontheskeletonof biologicalsystemstheoryoftoday.
