The use of infinitive in junior high school English
Verb infinitive is a non predicate verb structure composed of infinitive sign, to+ verb prototype. Some infinitive without to, infinitive can be the subject of the sentence, the predicate, object, attributive, adverbial, complement or used alone. An infinitive retains some of the characteristics of a verb, such as its own object, adverbial, etc.. A verb infinitive, together with the object, adverbial, etc of the verb, is called an infinitive phrase. This paper makes a brief analysis of the use of infinitive in grade nine.
Used as subject
There are not many situations where the verb infinitive is placed at the beginning of the sentence. In most cases, it is used as the form subject, and the real subject verb infinitive is placed at the end of the sentence, especially when the infinitive phrase is longer. The infinitive is used as the subject and the predicate verb is in the third person singular form. Infinitive phrases with interrogative subjects are often placed at the head of a sentence, and compound infinitive structures are used as subjects, often at the end of a sentence. Such as:
1.As, young, adults, it, is, our, duty, to, try, our, best, to, deal, with, each, challenge... (p.8)
2.The, head, teacher, said, it, was, necessary, to, talk, with, his, mother., p.16
3.How, to, make, requests, politely, is, important. (p.93)
Two, used as the predicative
The infinitive is often the subject, content, nature and characteristics. Such as:
1.The, best, way, to, improve, your, English, is, to, join, an, English,, club. (p.7)
2.The, first, thing, is, to, greet, the, teacher. (p.96)
