The role of pronunciation Pairwork: Look at the following statements and tell your partner whether you agree with them. 1.Students need to be able to read phonetic transcripts of words. 2. Students need to be able to write phonetic transcripts for words. 3. Bad pronunciation can lead to poor listening comprehension. 4.Descriptions of phonetic rules are necessary for students to remember the spelling of words. 5.Stress and intonation should be taught at the advanced level rather than from the very beginning. 6. Chinese students should try their best to achieve native-like English pronunciation. 7. Good pronunciation is important for building up the student’s confidence. We should pay attention to the distinction between pronunciation and phonetics. The teaching of pronunciation should focus on the students’ ability to identify and produce English sounds themselves. Students should not be led to focus on reading and writing phonetic transcripts of words, especially young students, because phonetic transcripts are more abstract and less meaningful.
