新视野读写教程2课文翻译(New horizons, reading and writing course, 2 text translation) Unit 1 Americans think no one can stop. If you dont try to be aggressive, you will fall behind. This attitude has created a nation devoted to research, experimentation and exploration. Time is one of the two elements that Americans pay attention to, and the other factor is labor. People always say, only time can govern us.. People seem to treat time as something that is almost real. We make time, save time, waste time, squeeze time, kill time, cut time, and use time. We also charge for time. Time is a precious resource, and many people feel that life is short. Time past cannot be called back again. We should make every minute count. A foreigners first impression of the United States is likely to be that everyone is in a hurry -- often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going, in the shop they anxiously expect the clerk to serve them immediately, or to hurry to buy something, with the elbows to push others. People also rush during meals during the day, partly reflecting the pace of life in this country. People think working hours are precious. In public eating places, people wait for others to finish as soon as possible so that they can eat in time, You will find the driver rude people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and casual chitchat with strangers. Dont think its against you, This is because people value time very much and they dont like to waste time to the point where they dont feel comfortable. Many people who have just arrived in the United States will miss the greeting at the start of a business visit. They will also miss the ritual exchanges of tea or coffee, which may be a custom in their own country. They may also miss the easy conversation in business at a restaurant or coffee shop. Generally speaking, Americans are not in such relaxed surroundings over long time chatting to evaluate their guests, not to me
