At the completion of this thesis, I strongly feel the need to express my gratitude to all the
people that have helped me with my study.
First of all, my sincere thanks go to my supervisor, Professor Yang Qingping, for his
helpful instruction, illuminating advice and constant encouragement. Also, my thanks will be
extended to all of those professors in the English Department of Henan University for their
thought-provoking lectures and help in the last three years. I also want to thank all my

ABSTRACT
Mo Yan’s winning of 2012 Nobel Prize in literature gave many Chinese a big surprise as
most people in China had known little about him and his books before. It is safe to say Mo’s
crowning should be attributed to the successful translation of his novels.
