On Jane Austin’s Ironic and Dramatic Effect of Narrative and Dialogues ――Based on Stylistic Analyses of Pride and Prejudice Abstract：Jane Austin， a renowned British novelist， is a great master of language. She is skilled in depicting ironic， dramatic effect of narrative and dialogues. Pride and Prejudice is her masterpiece， whose unique artistic characteristics with dramatic effect attract generations of readers. To explore Austin’s dramatic effect and to further appreciate her amazing writing techniques， this paper conducts stylistic analyses of Pride and Prejudice. Firstly， Austin’s narrative techniques are explored stylistically from syntactic structure and schema refreshment perspective. Secondly， the dramatic dialogues between Bennet couple are analyzed from speech presentation and cooperative principles. Key words：dramatic effect； schema refreshment； speech presentation； cooperative principles 中图分类号： I106 文献标识码： A 文章编号：1672-1578（2013）08-0001-02 1 Introduction Jane Austin is a well-known British novelist in the 19th century.“Pride and Prejudice， her masterpiece， is the most delightful one，for its unmatched ironic language and memorable characters”（Li Huaying， 2011： 289）.This kind of ironic， dramatic effect is not only revealed at the beginning of the novel with the famous and often quoted sentence， but at the coming striking contrast characterization of Bennet couple with dramatic dialogues. Indeed， after reading this novel， it is not exaggerated that readers will be left with the ironic， humorous impression. However，“although this novel’s language and style have been an object of constant study， its richness seems to be inexhaustible”（Hou Weirui， 2008： 190）. This paper attempts to explore the subtlety， irony and dramatic quality of the novel’s narrative and dialogues.
