Some possible effect s involved wit h acid rain on plant s ,soils , surface waters of t hree selected subtrop ical terrestrial ecosystems in sout hern China ,were revealed in t his p ap er . The content of total C in layer A ranged from 2 . 35 % ( Masson pine forest in Baiyunshan) to 5 . 33 % ( monsoon evergreen broad - leaved forest in Dinghushan) , wit h medium values of 2 . 75 % ( Mixed pine forest in Hes han) , and 3 . 87 % (Masson pine in Dinghushan) . The C/ N ratio was low ,at around 12 . 0 in layer A ,and declined wit h t he soil dept h . The low content of total - C and total - N ,as well as t he C/ N ratio indicated t hat t he organic matter was decomposed well ,due to t he warm and rainy subtropical ( ) climate . The base cation saturation B S was less t han 10 % in all sample layers of t he t hree sites , except one case t hat t he B S in layer A of t he Mixed pine forest in Heshan was 12 . 9 % , showing t hat t he soil acidification occurred to some extent .
