Unit 3 Section A: A Good Heart to Lean On 1. Teaching Objectives: To know the topic of a good heart To know the meaning and usage of some important words, phrases and patterns, text structure To be familiar with the writing skills: narration with comments, exemplification To improve Ss reading skills by studying section B 2 . Time Allotment: Section A (3 .5 periods): Section B (0.5 period): the ability to read for key ideas in sentences . 3. Teaching points : Lead-in (about 15 min. ) Description of your father and his love for you ★ New words(功能意念点或是考点/必讲点) 1. lean: vi 不及物动词,注意介词搭配: lean on sb. / sth. 依靠,依赖(……的帮助和支持);对……施加压力,威胁,恐吓 e.g. He leans heavily on his family. 他对家人的依赖性很强。 The government has been leaning on the TV company not to broadcast the show. 政府一直给电视公司施加压力,不准播放此节目。 lean against / on sth. 倚靠,靠在,靠着 e.g. A shovel was leaning against the wall. 一把铁锹靠墙放着。 lean to / towards / toward sth. 倾向,偏向(尤指某意见或利益) e.g. The UK leant towards the US proposal. 英国倾向于美国的提案。 2. embarrass: vt. to make sb. feel shy, awkward, ashamed, especially in a particular situation (尤指在社交场合)使尴尬,使窘迫 e.g. Her questions about my private life embarrassed me. 她询问我的私生活令我感到很尴尬。 The speech was deliberately designed to embarrass the Prime Minister. 这个发言是故意为难首相。 注意变体及用法: embarrassing: adj. 物作主语(或修饰物) embarrassed: adj. 人作主语 参考:exciting / excited; interesting / interested; frustrating / frustrated; surprising / surprised; boring / bore; amazing / amazed等等 e.g. an embarrassing situation 一个令人尴尬的场景 He felt embarrassed at being the center of attention. 他因自己成为众人注目的中心而很尴尬。 embarrassment: n. (to / for sb.)窘迫,困窘,令人为难的处境 e.g. Much to her embarrassment she realized that everybody had been listening to her singing. 她意识到大家一直在听她唱歌,感到很不好意思。 3. despite: prep. (+ n./-ing) 尽管,虽然 e.g. Despite old age, she is still learning to drive. 尽管年事已高她还在学开车。he was good at physics despite the fact that she found it boring. 尽管她认为物理枯燥无味,她却学得很好。 辨析:although, though, despite, in spite of Although和though都是连词,后面要跟句子。两词
