Pride and PunishmentPeople’s against the God’s command begins in the Genesis3:6 when the woman and man eat the forbidden fruit in the middle of the garden because the serpent allures the woman saying that she will not surely die and the fruit will make her as God and know good and evil. God’s command that ‘you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die’(Genesis3:2) becomes invalid when human-beings have no fear towards the warning of God and are too proud and even want to be like God. People’s against the God’s command thus results in destruction and punishment. Adam and Eve fall from the Garden of Eden. The Old Testament is full of stories of people’s against God’s command and their due punishment from God. This passage will illustrate this kind of pattern by analyzing the last part (chapter10-chapter16) of D.H. Lawrence’s the Rainbow to show the heroine Ursula’s pride and punishment.The Rainbow is composed of stories of three generations, among which Ursula’s story is of the youngest generation. Her too much of pride and lack of fear toward God which incur her punishment will be discussed in details. The discussion can be separated into three parts with the first parts(chapter10,11) about the doubts of Ursula toward some of teachings of the Bible, the second part(chapter12-15) is about her total negation of religion and the strengthening of her pride and the third part(chapter16) is her punishment from God and her pride is finally subdued.PartI doubts towards religion, pride began to growThe description of Ursula begins with “Ursula was very proud in her family. The Brangwen girls had all a curious blind dignity.” in chapter 10.
