An Analysis of How the Art of the Urban Public Space gets embodied in the Planning of Chicago Millennium ParkUrban public space refers to a multilayer and multi-functional space for all the citizens to use for free. It is also an important public space where the city residents cannot just exchange the materials and ideas but hold all kinds of activities. In the parks, plazas, markets, waterfronts, and natural areas of our cities, people from different cultural groups can come together in a supportive context of mutual enjoyment. As experiences are repeated, public spaces become vessels to carry positive communal meanings (Carr, S. etc. 1993). With the continual development of human society and the expanding scale of human community, the expectation for a perfect urban public space is strengthened. So it has been a realistic mission for modern designers to plan and build an urban public space in a scientific, reasonable and efficient way. The Chicago Millennium Park, which has won over 40 awards of urban planning, attracts visitors as well as designers home and abroad. Millennium Park is located in Loop commercial district of Chicago in Illinois, US, covering an area of 9.9 hectares. Known as the “Front lawn” of the city, Millennium Park was designed by Frank Gehry in October 1997 and was open to the public in 2004, originally being designed to celebrate the millennium. Since its opening, it has been a popular tourist spot in Chicago, only second to the Navy Pier. In addition, with three typical post-modern architectures- Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Cloud Gate and Crown Fountain and other famous buildings, Millennium becomes an unprecedented combination of distinctive architecture, innovative landscaping and monumental sculpture.
