In “Silent World,” McDaniels talks about a long distance relationship. But he discusses how it is difficult to devote enough time to a relationship like this. He discusses how one person might be trying really hard but that one person cannot make a relationship work and if one person is not as devoted or is too busy then it causes problems. A long distance relationship lacks a lot of the small moments and intimate actions that form a solid foundation for a relationship. In “Silent World,” McDaniels tells us that long distance relationships cannot work.The focus of this poem is long distance relationships. Though McDaniels begins talking about the government limiting word use and adapting to the new way the clear emotional focus of the work is on the long distance relationship. “Late at night, I call my long distance lover, proudly say I only used fifty-nine today.I saved the rest for you.” (McDaniels, 1)From here on, the poem only discusses this relationship. In fact, the beginning parts about the government only serve to set up the emotional tension for this relationship. All the emotional payoff in the poem focuses on this long distance lover so it is clear that this relationship is the central focus of the poem.McDaniels points out that people only have a certain amount of resources and have to spread these resources out between every aspect of their life. “the government has decidedto allot each person exactly one hundredand sixty-seven words, per day.” (McDaniels, 1)This is allotment of words is a metaphor for the limited resources people have to spend.
