Thomas Kennerly Wolfe, Jr. Tom Wolfe (Thomas Kennerly Wolfe, Jr.), 1931-, American journalist and novelist, b. Richmond, Va. Wolfe first gained fame for his studies of contemporary American culture in a style known as New Journalism, which combined personal impressions and opinions, reconstructed dialogue, slang, and academic jargon. His journalistic works include The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby (1965), The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968), Radical Chic and Mau-mauing the Flak Catchers (1970), The Right Stuff (1975), From Bauhaus to Our House (1981), and the anthology Hooking Up... New York City Subway The New York City Subway is a rapid transit system owned by the City of New York and leased to the New York City Transit Authority,[3] a subsidiary agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and also known as MTA New York City Transit. It is one of the most extensive public transportation systems in the world, with 468 reported passenger stations,[2] (or 422 if stations connected by transfers are counted as one),[4][5] 229?miles (369?km) of routes,[6] translating into 656 miles (1056 km) of revenue track, and a total of 842 miles (1355 km) including non-revenue trackage.[7] The subway is also notable for being among the few rapid transit systems in the world to run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.[8] It is the only system to hold that distinction among the ten busiest systems in the world in terms of annual passenger traffic. The system itself has more annual boardings than those in cities such as London, Paris, and Mexico City.[9] It has nearly twice as many daily riders as every other rapid transit system in the United States combined.
