This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). /licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract Jane Austen is not a voluminous writer, but her novels enjoy a great popularity among readers, and Mansfield Park (MP) is included. Fanny Price, the heroine of novel, undergoes a series of events and finally grows into a girl of independent mind and rational judgment. The theme of the novel maturity is intensified by Jane Austen’s delicate and deliberate employment of free indirect speech (FID) since FID possesses the function of blurring the distinction between the discourses from the narrator and the character. Specifically the discourses overlap between the omniscient narrator and the heroine Fanny Price in the novel so that Fanny acquires the knowledge beyond her. This paper offers a fresh illustration of the theme maturity with the help of analysis of the function of FID in the novel MP. In this way, this paper can contribute to the study of Austen and enlighten the following studies.
