Compare And Order Non-rational numbers比较与非有理数

* Now we can use the unit fractions to easily see which is larger! * Remember, when we used the loaves. Faith had 3 loaves to divide among 4 people. We ended up with each person getting half a loaf and a quarter of a loaf. * When faith had 4 loaves to divide among 5 people, Each person got half a loaf, a quarter of a loaf and a twentieth of a loaf. * By comparing unit fractions, both ? and 4/5 share the unit fractions ? and ?. So we can easily see 4/ is larger by 1/20th. All fractions can be compared this way. Is it a quick way to compare fractions.. Probably not. But it worthwhile to show how the Egyptians worked with fractions. * An easier way is to convert fractions to decimals. ( Well a much easier way is to KNOW the basic fraction-decimal equivalents.) This is where a discussion of reasonableness is important. May students, when converting fractions to decimals are unsure if they should divide the numerator by the denominator or the denominator by the numerator. There are many cure process rules you can use. Of most importance is they realize a proper fraction is ALWAYS larger than zero and smaller than 1. so if you were to ask them the decimal equivalent of 2/5, that if the should use a calculator and get 2.5 as an answer, they should immediately know something is wrong! * Spend time with a hands on activity. You will need a stack of proper fractions cards (see proper fraction cards sheets) Classroom Number Line Use a rope held by two students (or hooked to two points in the classroom. Let this be a pretty long piece of rope. You will use this to demonstrate the position of rational numbers. Begin by placing a zero on one end of the number line and one on the other end. Each student gets 2 cards (have them pick from a bag to just deal out 2 cards to each student) Select students at random to place one of their card on the rope (use clips or clothes pins). DO NOT judge the correctness of their placement – YET! When all cards are placed, d
