New Zealand New Zealand is a country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two large islands and numerous(许多的)smaller islands, most notably(明显地)Stewart Island(斯图尔特岛)and the Chatham Islands(查塔姆群岛). In Māori, New Zealand has come to be known as Aotearoa(the Māori name for New Zealand), which is usually translated into English as The Land of the Long White Cloud. New Zealand is notable(著名的) for its geographic isolation(孤立状态), being separated from Australia to the northwest by the Tasman Sea, approximately 2000 kilometers across. Its closest neighbors to the north are Fiji(斐济)and Tonga(汤加). The population is mostly of European descent(血统), with the indigenous(土生土长) Māori being the largest minority. Non-Māori Polynesian and Asian people are also significant minorities, especially in the cities. Elizabeth II, as the Queen of New Zealand, is the Head of State and is represented, in her absence, by a non-partisan(无党派)Governor-General; the Queen reigns(统治)but does not rule, so she has no real political influence. Political power is held by the democratically-elected(民主选举)Parliament(议会)of New Zealand under the leadership of the Prime Minister who is the Head of Government.
