Beck, The University of P e n n s v l v a n i a Cognitive behavior theralqy (CBT) has been demonstrated to be a useful adjunct to medication and other standard treatmentsfor schizophrenia patients. Although the cognitive approach to schizophrenia has becomepopular in the United Kingdom, it has received relatively little attention in the United States. The present paper serves as on overview of CBTfor schizophrenia, with an emphasis on delusions. We discuss thepurpose and enumerate the challenges of conducting CBT with schizophrenia patients, providing spe- cific case examples and strategies--such as normalizing, collaboration, behavioral experiments, understanding the meaning ofpa- tients dehzsions, role-plays, and image U exercises--Jbr handling such challenges.
