Divided in two by the Yangzi River, the southern part of Jiangsu is the backbone of its economy and comprises almost 60% of its total GDP, with only one third of its population but most of the affluent cities. The northern areas have historically lagged behind the south in overall economic development due to the logistics problems caused by the river. The first rail crossing of the river is at Nanjing. Jiangsu has several special economic development zones, with Suzhou and Wuxi being amongst the most successful in the country. The economy in Jiangsu benefits from the spill-over effects of the fast growing Shanghai economy.
