Who He Is Nathaniel Hawthorne (July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) American novelist , Short story writer, Central figure in the American Renaissance What He Did 1838,became engaged to Sophia Peabody 1842,worked at a Custom House and joined Brook Farm , a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody.
