Stylistic Analysis of O Captain !My Captain! outline Introduction Brief introduction about the author The background of the poem. Walt Whitman Walt Whiteman (1819----1892) is a geat American poet who devoted all his life to the creation of Leaves of Grass,which marked the end of the American romaticism.It has always been considered a monumental work that demands great attention because of its uniquely poetic embodiment of American ideals of demaocracy and equality. The poem we will analyze is selected from this collection. He created the form of free verse. But in this poem, he use a conventional meter and rhyme scheme .It is unusual for him. The background of the poem This poem is published in 1865. It is one of a group of poetry which the author write to commemorate the President Lincoln who is assassinated after the American war of Independence ended just five days( on April 14th, 1865 ). This poem expressed peoples deepest grief of the lost of the greatest leader on the grand moment of the celebration of the victory.
