In order to evaluate the feasibility of this project, the paper examines the dynamics of landscape change of the paddy fields in western Beijing, tracing the changing of the paddy fields with the environs through the period from the imperial and Republican years to the post- 1949 era. It is found that the relationship of the paddy fields with the imperial gardens, the discharge and retention of mountain torrents from the Western Hills, and the water supply of urban Beijing is most endurable and influential. Based upon this historic study, the feasibility of restoring paddy fields in contemporary Beijing will be generally evaluated. Key words: Paddy Field Landscape; City Development; Th
