Heat Treating of Steels
and Metallic Materials

Annealing of Ferrous Alloys
Normalizing:
austenitizing and air cooling
heat treatment to refine the grains,
(e.g. following a rolling
operation),
it produces a more uniform and
desirable grain size distribution.
Full Annealing:
austenitizing and furnace cool.
It is used in low- and medium-
carbon steels that need extensive
machining or plastic deformation.
Coarse microstructure is
produced
Spheroidizing:

Heat Treatment of Steels: Hardenability
effect of alloy composition on the ability of the steel to
transform to martensite at a lower cooling rate.
Ability of an alloy steel to be hardened by the formation of
martensite.

Heat Treatment of Steels: Hardenability
NOTE: hardness ≠ hardenabilty.
Hardenability is the capability of an
alloy steel to form martensite as a
result of a given heat treatment.
high hardenability in a steel means
that the steel forms martensite not
only at surface but to a large degree
throughout the interior.
Hardenability more related to depth
of hardness of a steel upon heat treat.
The depth of hardening in a plain
carbon steel may be 2-3 mm vs 50
mm in an alloy steel

Alloy steels of high
hardenability may be air
