The Longmen-Grottoes Ladies and gentlemen,welcome to Luoyang! First allow me make a self-introduction. My name is Xi Wenhuan, and my English name is Hilary. You can just call me Hilary. I am from Luoyang Sanxing International Travel Service. On behalf of the travel agency and my colleagues, I’d like to extend a warm-hearted welcome to all of you. I will try my best to make your visit smooth. Have you ever heard of the three great treasure houses of stone sculpture? And have you seen any of them? Ok, according to the schedule, this morning I’ll show you one of them. It is named the Longmen-grottoes, in Luoyang. Before we get there I’d like to give you an introduction to the Longmen-grottoes. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Now Let’s start with the general situation. Well, around 13 km south of Luoyang, there are two picturesque hills confronting each other with the Yi River flowing northward between them, connected by an arched stone bridge resembling a natural gate tower. This is the right place named Longmen, where the well-known Longmen-Grottoes are located. Everything here is ancient, the place with the name, the hills, the river and the grottoes, except the pretty environment with endless throngs of visitors. Lonemen, the name of the hills and also the grottoes, means “Dragon Gate” in English. In ancient China, kings or emperors used to regard themselves as “Real Dragons” or “Children of the Firmament” who were descended to the earth by the God to direct the human beings .So the word “Dragon” was often placed ahead of the article relating to them, namely “dragon robe”, “dragon bed”, “dragon pavilion” and so on .Therefore the exact meaning of Longmen here is “the Gated of an Imperial Capital”. As the name of the place, “Longmen” was called first by Emperor Suiyang, about 1,400 years ago, when his capital was made in Luoyang and its southern gate (the main entrance) just faced Yique, the old name of the place. Thus, “Longmen” as a new name has repl
