It regularly boasts annual double digit growth rates, and has the highest GDP per head of population in China. The skyscrapers and buildings along the Bund and in Pudong have become iconic images of the extraordinary development of the New China. Liverpool is one of the most influential cultural centres in the world. With 800 years of history, a centre of commerce and sea trade for hundreds of years, it has be- come world famous as the home of the Beatles, and Liverpool Football Club. In 2008, Liverpool will be the European Capital of Culture. In 2010 Shanghai will host the World Expo. Both these global events give the cities a common basis to work together. It is good, therefore, that they have been twinned since 1999.
