Try This Do you have a characteristic style of facial expression? Answer the following questions under each category honestly to see if you can detect any regular pattern of behavior in your nonverbal facial expressions. Withholder: Do you facial expressions show how you feel? Are you a person who shows very little expressiveness? Are you aware that you are not expressive? Revealer: Do you tell all with your face? Are you very expressive? Can other people tell whether or not you like a present, or some food, just by the expression on your face? Unwitting Expressor: Do you show emotion without realizing it? Do you ever say, “How did you know I was angry (or upset)?” Blanked Expressor: Do you think you are showing an emotion when in fact you show little if any expression at all? Do you have a neutral look on your face at all times? Frozen-affect Expressor: Do you constantly show one emotion (such as happiness) even when you are not experiencing that emotion at all? Substitute Expressor: Do you feel one emotion, think you are expressing it, but have others tell you that some other emotion was being expressed? Have you ever felt angry but looked sad, for example? Ever-ready Expressor: Do you almost instinctively show the same emotion as your first response to any new event? For example, do you express surprise as a first response to good news, bad news, an announcement that you have been fired? Flooded-affect Expressor: Do you frequently display more than one emotion? Is one of these emotions characteristic of you (like the Frozen-affect Expressor) and the other emotion, when felt, is mixed with the old, characteristic expression?
