Hippolyte and her son 9. the Death of Hippolytus 10. the End of Theseus 1. the Birth of Theseus Theseus was a king of Athens famous for many exploits, and appearing in works by many authors and on countless vases. There is some confusion about Theseus parentage (父亲的身份), some say he is the son of Aegeus and Aethra, and others the son of Poseidon and Aethra. They say Aethra waded out to Sphairia after sleeping with Aegeus, and lay there with Poseidon. The next day, Aegeus, who had been visiting Aethra at Troizen, left for his home city of Athens. As he left, he left sandals and a sword under a large rock; should Aethra bear a male child, she was to send him to Athens to claim his birthright as soon as he was old enough to lift the rock and retrieve (寻回) the items. Theseus recovered his fathers arms Thus Theseus was raised in the land of his mother. When Theseus grew up and became a brave young man, he moved the rock and recovered his fathers arms. His mother then told him the truth about his fathers identity and that he must take the weapons back to the king and claim his birthright. To get to Athens, Theseus could choose to go by sea (the safe way) or by land, where he would encounter a string of six entrances to the Underworld, each guarded by a chthonic (地府的) enemy in the shapes of thieves and bandits. Young, brave and ambitious, Theseus decided to go alone by the land route, and defeated a great many bandits along the way. 2. Theseus’ First Adventure At the Isthmian (地峡的) entrance to the Netherworld (阴间) was a robber named Siris or Sinis, the pine-bender. Because he was strong enough to bend down the tops of pinetrees until they touched the earth, and would often ask innocent passers to help
