TITLE: Hand scrub thickening agent assessment and cleaner competitive analysis INSTITUTION: Natures Organics, 31 Cornhill Street, Ferntree Gully VIC 3156 SUPERVISOR: Elias Belmonte – Chief Development Chemist RESEARCH FOCUS: Personal hand care and household cleaning formulations, with different batching methodologies and performance testing methods RESEARCH BACKGROUND: The use of quality environmentally responsible formulations, persistence in finding natural alternatives to chemical ingredients, ongoing investment in research and development and a firm belief in sustainable packaging has seen many Australian companies scrambling to meet these criteria. Natures Organics sells a range of products, encompassing laundry, dishwashing, household cleaning, skin and haircare categories, available through major supermarket chains throughout Australia and internationally. The company produces eco-sensitive formulations, which are free of phosphate, bleach and ammonia. The lack of these ingredients substantially reduces waterway pollution and animal habitat degradation; and only surfactants that are readily biodegradable (as tested to the Australian Standard AS 4351) are used. Formulation is a word whose fundamental meaning is the putting together of components in appropriate relationships or structures, according to a formula. Rheology is the branch of physics that deals with the deformation and flow of matter, especially the non-Newtonian flow of liquids and the plastic flow of solids .
