I. An angel of the Lord freed the apostles from their prison (vv. 17-26). A. The high priest and Sadducees imprisoned all of the apostles. 1. They imprisoned the apostles because they were jealous of them. a. Because the apostles were being used for miracles and signs and wonders, the Sadducees, who were most tied to the temple, despised them. b. Because the apostles had the ears of the people and were popular and well respected by the people of Israel, the Sadducees were jealous of their quick popular status. 2. They imprisoned the apostles because they disobeyed the injunction not to preach Jesus. a. Earlier in Acts (4:1-22), Peter and John had been taken by the Sanhedrin for their healing of the crippled man in chapter 3. b. Peter spoke to the people concerning the man’s healing and witnessed about Jesus, which had infuriated them. c. Peter and John had been told by the Sanhedrin to no longer preach in Jesus’ name, but they had ignored this injunction in favor of obeying God instead of man when man’s ruling goes against God. d.
