Human ecology research in a rapidly urbanized area Xie Yufeng Peking University Chapter 1. Background meaning of the project From the statistics of professors from North Carolina State University and University of Georgia, sometime during the first decade of the 21st century, the world urban population surpassed the world rural population. This rapid urbanization brings with it huge demand of natural resources, pollution, serious threats to the environment, and also problems within cities. A good environment is the basis and an integral component of a modern city. In recent years, more and more people have been recognizing that it is necessary to be harmonious with nature. Protecting urban ecology is central to the sustainable development of a city. Therefore, we must make use the study of Landscape Ecology as the base of city design, to create urban green spaces, and supply a comfortable environment for people. Shenzhen is a development model for Chinese cities, and is also the focus zone of problems in population, natural resources, energy, and environment. We can say that the problems which have emerged in the process of development in Shenzhen, are the very ones that other cities will face. As the largest district in Shenzhen, Longgang has a good ecological base and potential. During urbanization, the area of hills and water has decreased, and their proportion in the urban zone is too low. This is not in accordance with the need of urban people to come back to nature: to live in a beautiful environment and to breathe fresh air. This project will take Longgang District of Shenzhen as a case, and study the design and constructing of a human eco-environment, to realize the problem of sustainable development in fast urbanization, and how to ensure and improve the quality of this human eco-environment. The meaning of this research is to analyze this living environment, taking RS (Remote Sensing) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) as tools. We also consider
