OVERALL PROPERTIES OF ANISOTROPIC COMPOSITES

BOUNDS of Hashin-Shtrikman type and self-consistent estimates for the overall properties of
composites, which may be anisotropic, are developed. Bodies containing aligned ellipsoidal inclusions
are considered particularly, generalizing previously known results. The overall thermal conductivity
of a body containing aligned spheroidal inclusions is discussed as an example including, as limiting
cases, bodies containing highly-conducting aligned needles and bodies containing aligned penny-
shaped cracks.
1. INTRODUC~ON
WE CONSIDER the determination of the overall properties of a composite material
comprising a matrix in which are embedded inclusions at arbitrary concentrations.
The main theoretical results are formulae from which bounds on the overall properties
of interest (elastic moduli, conductivities, etc.) can be obtained, and from which
‘self-consistent’ estimates of the relevant properties can also be calculated. The
work is, in a sense, a generalization of that of WALP~LE (1969), who considered the
elastic moduli of a composite in the limiting cases where the inclusions were needle-
