McDaniel NoiseControlLaboratory,ThePennsyloaniaStateUniversity,21.t EngineeringUnitE, UniversityPar• Pennsyloania16802 (Received13April 1984;acceptedfor publication15May 1984} Acousticagglomeration(AA} isanintermediatetreatmentofaerosolscontainingsubmicron-and micron-sizedparticlessothat conventionalcleaningdevicessuchaselectrostaticprecipitators, baghouses,andscrubberscanremovethesefineparticlesmoreefficiently.The high-intensity acousticfieldintheAA causeslocalvelocityfluctuationsto movetheparticlesrelativeto one another,collide,adhere,andgrow.Thispaperaddressesthequestionofwhethersuchhighly intenseacousticfields(approximately160dB)will causerandomvelocityfluctuationsofsucha magnitudethat thisacousticturbulencesignificantlyaffectsAA. The experimentalstudy resultsshowthat onlytheacousticvelocityfluctuationsat theexcitationfrequencydominatethe localvelocityandthereforetheparticlemotions.Althoughsomeacousticallygeneratedrandom motionisnotedwithincreasingacousticintensityabove160-dBsoundpressurelevel,theenergy in turbulentfluctuationsisaboutthreeordersof magnitudelowerthanthe energyin acoustic frequencyandharmonics.The paperconcludesthat acousticallyinducedturbulencedoesnot playa significantroleinAA.
