theopen-circuitelasticcompliancecoefficient,s•3,ofgrain-orientedTerfenol-D,
Tbo.3Dye.7Fel.03,producedby a modifiedBridgmantechnique.Prestresslevelsto 9500psi (65
MPa) andmagneticbiasfieldsupto 2200Oe ( 175kA/m) wereappliedwith a laboratory
electromagnetmodifiedsothat onepolepieceservedasa hydraulicallyactuatedpiston.The
resultsindicatethatd•3,/.t33,r ands33are dependentonstressandmagneticfield,sothatproper
mechanicalprestrcssandmagneticbiasconditionsarecriticalto the successfuluseof Terfenol-
D in transducersandactuators.Radiated-powerlimitsfor underwateracousticprojectorsare
estimatedandcomparedwith thosefor projectorshavingleadzirconatetitanate(PZT-4)
piezoelectricdrivers.Tcrfenol-Dbasedtransducerscanbcasmuchas8 dB superiorto PZT-4
underlow-Q,field-limitedconditions(Q = mechanicalqualityfactor).
