In art and literature: realism is used to identify a literary movement in Europe and the United States in the last half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. Development(P375-376) 1. the great wave of romantic movement had spent its force in the fourth decade of the 19th century. European literature moved in the direction of realism. 2.Realists:want a truthful representation in their works of contemporary life and manners; thought their method were observational and objective. 3. By the 1850s the term realism was applied to the art of Gustave Courtbet. 4. In art and literature realism came as a protest against the falseness and sentimentality which realists thought they saw in romantic fiction. Courbet was born in Ornans (Jura). Best known as an innovator in Realism, he was a painter of figurative compositions, landscapes and seascapes. He was famous for his declaration on realism.
