Unit 1 Suspense 1. What is suspense? 1. What is suspense? Suspense is defined as a feeling of anxiety or excitement that results from being uncertain about an outcome or a decision. 2. When can we feel suspense ? 2. When can we feel suspense ? We can feel suspense during an exciting football match. We are left in suspense while waiting for the announcement of a decision that personally affects us. We undergo apprehension and fear before we anticipate an important news. 3. Suspense as a basic element in stories The readers are interested in a story because they want to know how events will unfold and what the fate of the hero or heroine will be. 4. How to create suspense The author should provide enough clues to anticipate what will happen. The readers are uncertain about what will happen. Translate the passage on the next 2 pages into Chinese. The most important point in the creation of the suspense is the creation of uncertainty. You should create exhilarating and thrilling atmosphere of something unknown, something unexpected and even unpredictable. This technique, named foreshadowing, is one of the most widely used techniques in the writing of the fiction stories. It can also be applied in writing the informal essays.  During this process you use another technique- withholding. Every time when the readers ask themselves various questions on the progress of the events in your essay, you withhold the information.
