Nearly 3,000 died in the attacks. Suspicion quickly fell on al-Qaeda, and in 2004, the groups leader Osama bin Laden, who had initially denied involvement, claimed responsibility for the attacks.1 Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited U.S. support of Israel, the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives for the attacks. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror, invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, which had harbored al-Qaeda members. Background information Heroism In Greek myth and folklore, was originally a demigod, their cult being one of the most distinctive features of ancient Greek religion, hero (male) and heroine (female) came to refer to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greatergood of all humanity. This definition originally referred to martial courage or excellence but extended to more general moral excellence. Stories of heroism may serve as moral examples. In classical antiquity, hero cults that venerated deified heroes such as Herracles, Perseus, and Archilles played an important role in Ancient Greek religion.
