College students’ class schedules Each class usually meets for 3 hours every week Either 3 times a week for one hour Or twice a week for one and half hours Undergrad students take on average about 15 credit hours a semester About 5 courses each semester Sounds easy? Wrong! It is believed that for every 1 hour in the classroom, students should spend at least 3 hours doing work for the course College Life Students usually attend class 12-18 hours per week Students can choose all of their own classes Students can make their own timetable Students can choose and change their major However, usually the school will want students to take classes in all areas to gain a “well-rounded” education College Life Many students dine in the local dining halls, composed of popular restaurants such as Subway, Taco Bell, and Chick-Fil-A--They may use their student card if they purchased it ahead of time, or use the available ATMs. After classes, many students participate in intramural teams, social clubs, or head to the gym. Many students study in the libraries (major-focused), on the lawn, or in the common area of their dormitories. College Life Activities/clubs you are involved in outside of classes Examples: Student Government, intramural sports, community service, other interest clubs, Newspaper Two important organizations to know Fraternities (boys) and Sororities (girls) Together known as “Greek Organizations” Groups that share the same interests and spend a lot of time together Live together, social events, parties, and volunteer work Workplace/Part-time Job -For extra money, many students rely on part-time jobs in restaurants, bars, on campus, tutoring, or recreational parks. -Scholarships, Grants, and Loans are available, but sometimes it’s not enough! -Minimum wage: $7.00 an hour (this is different in every state) College Life Although I was lucky to have my parents paying my tuition, I had to work to pay for everything else: Books for school (about $300 every term) C
