汽 车 专 业 英 语Special English for Automobile 主讲人：黄学勤 Instructor：Huang Xueqin 4.STARTING THE ENGINE 1.Make sure the parking brake is applied. 2.Place the transmission selector lever in P (Park). If you need to restart the engine while the vehicle is in motion, carefully move the selector lever to N (Neutral). 3.Turn the ignition switch to START（Ш）and hold it there until the engine starts (a maximum of 10 seconds). Then release the key. 4.Let the engine warm up for about 10 seconds before driving. In extremely cold weather, below -18℃(0℉), or after the vehicle has been standing idle several days, let it warm up without operating the accelerator. Whether the engine is cold or warm, it should be started without depressing the accelerator. 1.When the engine is cold, if the engine fails to start using the normal procedures, it may be that the engine is flooded (has excessive fuel in the cylinders). If this is the case, follow the starting procedure outlined below. Depress the accelerator fully and hold it. While holding the accelerator fully depressed, turn the ignition switch to the START（Ш）position and hold it (a maximum of 10 seconds; cranking ) to discharge the excess fuel. If the engine starts, the engine speed will increase suddenly; release the key and the accelerator immediately. In this case, the following procedures are not necessary. (3) Release the accelerator after cranking the engine. (4) Without depressing the accelerator, crank the engine until it starts (a maximum of 10 seconds). 2.When the engine is warm, the above procedure should not be performed, as it will make starting even more difficult. If the engine is unusually difficult to restart when it is warm (fails to start after repeated attempts without depressing the accelerator), depress the accelerator about halfway to start it. 1.Superior parking ability. 2.
