Doctorate English ProgramAcademic Writing Course Slide Series 5 Announcements Some Common Writing Errors There MUST be a connection between the topic sentence, the details, and the conclusion. Most of you are expressing too many ideas with no cohesion. Remember unity of information, unity meaning “one”. Watch your punctuation. Break up sentences that are too long, or join short ones that are related into one using a coordinating conjunction. (see slides on comma usage) Sentences can be simple (1 independent clause), compound (2 independent clauses), complex (1 independent clause and 1 dependent clause), or compound-complex (2 independent clauses and 1 or 2 dependent clauses). Other than these structures, the sentences may seem too long and not comprehensible. Some Common Writing Errors She said, “I hate you!” Do not use a full-colon (:) after the word “said”, or any similar word. My mother said: “Why don’t you eat something?” (incorrect) My mother said, “Why don’t you eat something?” (correct) If you use an exclamation or question mark at the end of a quote, you do not need to put a period to finish the sentence. She said, “I hate you!.” (incorrect) She said, “I hate you!” (correct) She asked, “What is your name?.” (incorrect) She asked, “What is your name?” (correct) Some Common Writing Errors Remember, you can play a musical instrument, a joke, and computer games. But children play WITH toys, WITH a ball, WITH their friends. Be sure of when to use the phrases “On the one hand,…” and “On the other hand,….” They usually illustrate opposing or contrary positions, facts, attributes, qualities, etc. They are often used together. But you may use “on the other hand” to introduce a contrary position. Einstein was a hard-working scientist. (adjective) He worked hard in the laboratory. (verb and adverb) Through his hard work, he achieved greatness. (noun) Maybe vs may be – Maybe (perhaps) he’ll come, and maybe (perhaps) he won’t. The book may be (the verb be +
