I have a dream修辞学分析 Rhetorical Analysis of I Have a Dream “I have a dream”, the well-known speech delivered by Martin Luther King, displays many kinds of rhetoric features. I will analyze it in terms of alliteration, simile, metaphor, parallelism, repetition, antithesis, comparison, quotation and the usage of words. 1、 Alliteration (1) We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline(para10) (2)Great trials and tribulations (para15) By using alliteration, King enhanced the rhythm of language to make it more memorable. 2、 Simile (1) No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream. (para14) (2) This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.(para2) We can see the signal words “like” and “as”here. King grew an analogy between the Declaration of Independence and the beacon light of hope, a joyous daybreak, evoking admiration in the audiences. 3、Metaphor (1) Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.(para10) (2) One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. (para3) (3) In a sense weve come to our nations capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.(para4) (4) It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, in so far as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked insufficient funds.
