Chapter 10 Application s t o Natura l Resource s The rapid increase of world population is causing a corresponding in- crease in th e demand for consumption of natural resources . As a conse- quence th e optimal management and utilization of natural resources is becoming increasingly important . There are two main kinds of natural resource models, those involving renewable resoiuces such as fish, food, timber, etc. , and those involving nonrenewable or exhaustible resources such as petroleum , minerals , etc . In Section 10. 1 we deal with a fishery resource model, th e sole owner of which is considered t o be a regulatory agency. The management prob- lem of th e agency is t o control the rat e of fishing over time so that an appropriate objective fimction is maximized over an infinite horizon . A differential game extension known as th e common property fishery re- source model is discussed in Section 12.1.3 . For other applications of optimal control theory to renewable resource models including those in- volving predator-prey relationships , see Clark (1976), Goh, Leitmann , and Vincent (1974), and J0rgensen and Kort (1997) . Section 10.2 deals with an optimal forest thinning model, where thin- ning is th e process of removing some trees from th e forest t o improve its growth rat e and quality . An extension t o a chain of forests model is presented in Section 10.2.3 .
