Chapter 5.2 Tense Tense means the different kinds of forms of verb which represent the time when something happens. There are 16 kinds of tenses to express different kinds of time forms. 1. the Present Indefinite (1)It represents:something happens frequently and repeatedly I ususlly get up at 6 in the morning. We have lunch at 12. (2)It represents the present state or situation. He loves sports. I major in English. (3)It represents the objective truth. Light travels faster than sound. Two and four makes six. Water boils at 100°C. The moon moves around the earth. (4)It represents the action happens in the future, according to the arrangement. The plane takes off at 11 a.m.. We start tomorrow. Tomorrow is Saturday. School begins the day after tomorrow. Note:①the present indefinite can be used to represent the future. such as begin,come,go,leave,sail,start,arrive,return,drive,end,stop,depart,open,close,be,etc. There words are often used in the present indefinite. ②in adverbial clause of time or condition . If it refers to the future ,we often use the present indefinite to represent the future. If you come tomorrow, Ill wait for you . I wont leave until he comes tomorrow. Tell her about that when she comes. Well start as soon as you are ready. ③behind the words hope, suppose ,assume, we often use the present indefinite. I hope it keeps fine for a few more days. Suppose he doesnt agree, what shall we do? Assuming it rains tomorrow, what shall we do ? (5)It can represent the things happened in the past.(behind the verbs such as say, tell, hear, etc.) I forget where he lives. He tells me that you are back. They say the teacher is back. Is that true? 2. The Present Continuous 1)It mainly refers to something or action that is happening now, or at this time. Where are they having the basketball match?
