待价而沽——wait for a good price; wait for the highest bid
? Confucius was a famous thinker and educator in ancient China. In his early twenties, he began to take a great interest in politics. He often made statements on various aspects of state administration. But he was truly involved in politics for only a little more than four years. That was because of the rulers’ attitude toward him – always keeping him at arm’s length and staying at a respectful distance from him.
After that, he together with his students, he set about a travel through various states propagating his ideas. Zigong, one of his students, felt puzzled about Confucius’ decision not to take up any official post.
“If you had a piece of perfect jade, would you wrap it up in a piece of silk cloth and keep it safely in a box, or sell it to somebody?”
In fact, Zigong asked the question as a metaphor(暗喻) for suggesting that Confucius should take up an official post.
Of course, Confucius understood what he meant. He said, “Of course, I would sell it! But I’d have to wait for a real connoisseur(鉴赏家)!”
Actually, Confucius was waiting for someone who really appreciated his talent before he could render his service.
The set phrase “dai jia er gu”, literally to sell to the highest bidder, is a metaphor for talented people waiting for the chance to come.

尽善尽美——by no means flawless
Confucius was a great thinker and educator during the Spring and Autumn period in China. He was also skilled in music, chess, calligraphy and painting. When he was 35 years old, a great social turmoil occurred in his home state, Lu. So, Confucius fled to the neighboring state of Qi.
One day, the official music band of Qi received Confucius.
“Sir, your gracious presence here is a great honor for my country.”
“I’m flattered.”
“I’ve long heard you are quite versed in music. We’d like to play a tune for you and hope you’d critique our performance.”
“I’m flattered. I wonder what tune you’re going to play.”
