(Bill Gates first headed the list in 1992, the year Walton died). In 1998, Walton was included in Times list of 100 most influential people of the 20th Century. Walton was honored for all his pioneering efforts in retail in March 1992, when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George H. W. Bush. After his death in 1992, he left his ownership in Wal-Mart to his wife and their children. The company continued to expand, including online commerce and stores around the world. By 2001 there were more than 4,500 Wal-Mart stores worldwide. Wal-Mart stores operate in The United States, Mexico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, China, Puerto Rico, Germany, South Korea, and in the United Kingdom. Sam was born in a small town in Oklahoma, he grew up during the Great Depression. Sam learned from childhood to help fend for his family (he sold milk and delivered newspapers as a child). Then he studied in college (where he distinguished himself mainly through sports), then at Columbia ?University where he studied economics. Three days after graduating, Walton was hired in a JC Penney store as a manager in the company. In 1942 he met Helen Robson, daughter of a banker and herself a graduate in commerce, she became his wife on 14 February 1943. Shortly thereafter, Sam joined the U.S. Army. Sam Walton at the end of the war (in 1945) decided to open his own shop
