incentive n. — encouragement to greater activity, motivating factor, stimulus Cf. incentive vs. stimulus Incentive means a stimulus to action, but incentive applies to a cause which encourages action or activity while stimulus refers to something, either physiological or psychological, that causes a reaction or growth. Examples: Our bonus payments provide an incentive to work harder. Tax incentives have been very effective in encouraging people to save or invest more of their income.
