Current Situation and Trends: In history, literature has been playing an important role in representing and changing both people and the society. With the influence of women’s movement, the feminine consciousness was awakened in the female writers of 19-century English literature. They bravely used their pens to express the real feelings toward the unfair female social circumstances. And Jane Austen is the most prominent and larruping female writer among them. Jane Austen is the first great female writer in English literature and represents that women are playing an increasingly important part in literary field. In her novel Emma, she not only pays attention to women status in society, but also creates a new image of woman: a vivid and lifelike female. Emma, the heroine of the novel, appears as an intelligent, confident, independent but proud and selfish woman. Through Emma, Jane Austen expresses her attitude towards female marriage and social status, and shows us her development of feminine consciousness in literature. Many people have analyzed Jane Austen and her novels. However, most of them prefer to appreciate her Pride and Prejudice and think it is the most representative novel of hers. Even though a few people have appreciated her Emma, they can not analyze and comment the feminine consciousness in the novel completely and objectively.
