unit 5 John Donne John Donne Donne is famous for writing in at least two genres of poetry: erotic love poetry, like To His Mistress Going to Bed and The Flea, and devotional (religious) poetry, like the famous Holy Sonnets. There is not always a strict line between religion and eroticism in Donnes poetry, and in the seventeenth century you could be a preacher and still take a passionate interest in sex. Donne, we should add, was a well-known preacher who converted from Catholicism to Protestantism. Metaphysical poet Metaphysics: 形而上学==形而下学 metaphysical poets: 玄学派 a term coined by the poet and critic Samuel Johnson to describe a loose group of British lyric poets of the 17th century, whose work was characterized by the inventive use of conceits, and by speculation about topics such as love or religion. These poets were not formally affiliated; most of them did not even know or read each other. The Flea was written in an age when people were not such squeamish germophobes as they are now. Fleas were a not-infrequent subject of seventeenth-century European painting. The image of a flea sucking blood would not have automatically led a Renaissance audience to recoil in horror. Form of the poem This poem alternates metrically between lines in iambic tetrameter and lines in iambic pentameter, a 4-5 stress pattern ending with two pentameter lines at the end of each stanza. The rhyme scheme in each stanza is similarly regular, in couplets, with
