Scope
This e-brief aims to give an ove rview of the array of se rvices and support provided to
the e lde rly in Australia. The te rms e lde rly and aged are take n he re to mean people
aged ove r 65 years of age . It should be noted howeve r, that some support for the
aged is give n to people w ho are younge r than that, for example , some concessions for
transport and e ntrance fees are provided to people ove r 60 years or eve n 55 years of
age . Give n the numbe r and breadth of the various programs that are available to the
aged and, give n the fact that all three leve ls of gove rnme nt and the non-gove rnme nt
sector are involved in the provision of these programs, it is only possible to outline
the main support and se rvices provided. The main e mphasis is on the role of the
Commonwealth in te rms of support and assistance for the aged, but brief details of
the role of the non-gove rnme nt sector and that of State /Te rritory and local
gove rnme nts are also give n.
One section of this brief gives some background on the ve ry important issue of the
age ing of the Australian population and contains links to contrasting view s on j ust how
policy make rs now , and into the future , should respond to this age ing phe nome non.
Included are an exte nsive numbe r of links to we b sites across Australia and, w he re
appropriate , brief introductory comme nts that put the various links in context are
included. Some examples of re levant ove rseas links are also included.
